Renovated Pattichio Park Officially Opens in Larnaca

Cyprus’s agriculture minister attended the opening ceremony.

On Wednesday, October 21, Cyprus Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Christos Senekis officially opened the renovated Pattichio Municipal Park in Larnaca on behalf of the President of the Republic. The park had already reopened to visitors in August, but the official opening ceremony was held only now.

The main new feature is an elevated circular pedestrian bridge built around the Pattichio Amphitheater. It allows visitors to walk among the trees and enjoy views of Larnaca Salt Lake. The park also now includes:

  1. new viewing platforms;
  2. a children’s playground;
  3. a café-restaurant;
  4. a botanical garden with aromatic plants.

The municipal amphitheater, which hosts concerts, theatrical performances, and other cultural events, was also renovated.

Why Was the Park’s Opening Delayed?

Renovation work began in October 2023. The project budget exceeded €5 million. The opening was delayed by around eight months. Following protests from local residents, the project was revised to reduce the amount of concrete surfacing and preserve more natural space. Sports courts, a skate park, and most of the planned parking spaces were removed from the original design. Construction was also affected by restrictions on work near a protected natural area.

Larnaca Salt Lake and Flamingos

Pattichio Park is located next to Larnaca Salt Lake, one of the most important wintering grounds for migratory birds in Cyprus. The lake is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and was designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention in 2001. From November to March, thousands of flamingos can usually be seen here. The birds feed on small crustaceans. If food becomes scarce, they may move to Akrotiri Salt Lake near Limassol or continue farther south to Africa.

The park’s new viewing platforms offer visitors the opportunity to enjoy the lake and observe local wildlife. However, the chances of seeing flamingos depend on the season and conditions at the lake.

Senekis emphasized that urban development should go hand in hand with environmental protection. According to him, the park’s renovation improves residents’ quality of life and demonstrates how modern public spaces can be created while preserving Cyprus’s natural heritage.

The renovation also included upgraded walking paths, lighting, and other infrastructure. The area was made more accessible for pedestrians, cyclists, and people with disabilities. The project was implemented with European Union co-financing under the THALIA 2021–2027 program.
