The renovation of the historic New Helvetia Hotel in Platres is nearing completion.
The oldest operating hotel in Cyprus is expected to reopen its doors to guests in March 2025 in a fully refurbished state.
The hotel is situated on a mountain, surrounded by trees and shrubs, with a magnificent view of the picturesque Caledonia Falls. As the New Helvetia is an EU World Heritage Site, the renovation was carried out in accordance with special building regulations. The hotel has modernised all areas of the hotel, upgraded the rooms and improved the dining areas.
Once open, New Helvetia will help attract local and international tourists to the Platres Mountain Resort, enriching the tourism industry in Cyprus and providing jobs for the villagers.
New Helvetia is a family-run hotel that was opened in 1906. The hotel is owned by the Kypriotis family who loved to holiday in Switzerland. When the hotel was built, the owner went out on the balcony of one of the rooms and saw the mountain scenery, which reminded her of that beautiful country. This is how the hotel got its name 'Helvetia', a female personification of Switzerland. In 1929, a second building was added to the hotel. Until 1947 the Grand Hotel 'Helvetia' was officially the largest hotel in Cyprus.
Let us remind you that Platres claims to be the new pearl of mountainous Cyprus.
Huge sums of money are currently being invested in the development of the village. Some investors are actively buying up and renovating old and abandoned hotels, while others are busy building new complexes and luxury villas.
