The municipal market in Deryneia has undergone a complete transformation and now boasts a modern, functional look. After an extensive reconstruction, it is ready once again to welcome local producers and visitors. The grand opening is scheduled for December 27 — the day by which the Paralimni–Deryneia municipality will complete the final preparation works.
The major renovation brings to life a long-standing request from the former municipality, which had been striving for the modernization of the space for many years. The original version of the market had been operating since 2013, but over time lost relevance and no longer met the needs of residents. In May 2024, a full reconstruction worth €1.5 million began, and now the facility is ready for use, despite a slight delay in the timeline.
New Infrastructure and Comfort for Visitors
The reconstruction included the creation of a spacious open-air trading area with metal awnings, drinking fountains, a cozy square, and a modern café with a covered terrace. In addition, sanitary facilities, car parking, and bicycle stations were installed on the market grounds.
Special attention was given to improving the overall environment: all urban furnishings were upgraded, a safe children’s playground was built, and a rainwater management system was implemented. All these improvements make the market comfortable to visit in any weather and turn it into an attractive destination for both locals and tourists.

New Opportunities for Producers and Shoppers
After opening, the market will feature 50 vendor spots where producers can offer fresh vegetables, fruits, greens, fish, snails, organic and farm products, dried fruits, nuts, flowers, cheeses, meat products, and traditional Cypriot goods without commercial branding.
The project aims to strengthen the local economy by promoting Cypriot products, supporting farmers, and stimulating the development of rural areas. According to municipal authorities, the market will become an important tool for restoring interest in local goods and encouraging direct “producer-to-consumer” trade.
European Funding and Strategic Importance
The reconstruction of the municipal market is part of the Cyprus Rural Development Programme 2014–2020. The project was implemented with co-financing from the Cyprus Rural Payments Agency and the EU Funds Unit of the Ministry of Interior.
At a time of growing interest in gastronomic tourism and eco-friendly products, the market’s new infrastructure may become a significant driver of sustainable regional development. It is expected to attract additional tourist flows from visitors eager to discover traditional Cypriot produce directly from local farmers.
