The Cyprus government intends to modernise the fishing harbour of Pomos, an infrastructure facility actively used by local professional fishermen. The Public Works Department is expected to announce the relevant tender by the end of 2026. The estimated cost of the works is €500,000. Funding will be provided under the Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme for 2021–2027.
What will change at Pomos Port
The main part of the project will involve deepening the waters of the fishing shelter. The works are expected to improve conditions for fishing vessels entering and berthing at the harbour and to increase operational safety. Repairs and improvements to the existing infrastructure are also planned. The aim is to bring the shelter facilities up to a more modern and safer standard so that they can be used more efficiently by professional fishermen.
The authorities are also paying particular attention to safety. During 2026, a CCTV system and modern lighting are planned to be installed at the Pomos fishing harbour, which should improve visibility at night and enhance the safety of people and vessels.
According to Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis, the main goal of the modernisation is to provide practical support to local fishermen and create more modern working conditions for them.
When will the renovation begin
The project is currently at the preparation stage. The next key step will be the announcement of the tender by the Public Works Department, which is expected by the end of 2026. Once the necessary procedures have been completed, the contractor will be able to begin implementing the project. The main areas of work have already been identified: deepening the harbour waters, repairing and modernising the infrastructure, and improving port safety.
