Opening of Pattichio Park in Larnaca Delayed

The opening of Pattichio Park in Larnaca has been postponed. The announcement was made recently by the city’s mayor, Andreas Vyras, who explained that the updated schedule is due to significant modifications to the project. Initially, authorities planned to complete all works by February 2026, but several factors have forced a revision of the timeline. It is now expected that the new public space will not be accessible to visitors before April.

Reasons for the Delay and Project Adjustments

The main reasons for the postponement include changes to the architectural plans and restrictions imposed by the Nature Protection Service, which regulates the use of construction machinery near the Salt Lake. The project began in autumn 2023 but was soon paused due to protests from local residents concerned about excessive construction and expanding concrete zones. Following public consultations, the decision was made to significantly redesign the project.

In the updated version, most sports facilities and associated parking areas were removed. The only exceptions are the parking zones near Artemidos Avenue (leading to the airport) and Ipirou Street, though their size has been substantially reduced. As for the pedestrian bridge, its dimensions have also been revised — the maximum height will now be 7.6 meters.

A New Eco-Friendly Vision

Pattichio Park will be located next to the Larnaca Salt Lake, an important natural habitat where migrating flamingos stop every year. Because of this, environmental groups insisted on reducing intensive development and increasing green spaces. The concept of the park now focuses on sustainability, natural tranquility, and the preservation of the local ecosystem.

According to recent statements from the municipality, the revised project will include more shaded areas and natural landscape features. There will be walking paths, waterfront relaxation zones, and family-friendly spaces. The city is also considering the installation of an interactive eco-museum dedicated to the Salt Lake and local bird species — though this idea is still under discussion.

What Larnaca Residents Can Expect

Upon completion, the city will gain one of the largest recreational parks in Cyprus, becoming an important part of Larnaca’s tourism and environmental infrastructure. Authorities assure that the revised concept will make the park more harmonious and sustainable, enhancing its value as both a natural and cultural space.
