The American University of Beirut-Mediterraneo will open its doors to students in Paphos on the 4th of September.
The ceremony, scheduled for 7pm at 50 Apostolou Paulou Avenue, promises to be a major event for both the university and the city.
The event will be attended by numerous guests, including the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulidis, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the American University of Beirut Abdo George Kadifa, the US Ambassador to Cyprus Julie Fisher, the Mayor of Paphos Fedonas Fedonos, the Rector of the University Wassim El Hajj, as well as the University administration, faculty, students and other public figures.
It is recalled that on the 7th of April 2022, the Municipality of Paphos signed a cooperation agreement with the management of the University. On the 8th of April, the agreement was signed by the former President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, and the US Assistant Secretary of State, Wendy Sherman, who came to Cyprus specifically for this purpose.
As part of the agreement, the foreign university was given a complex of buildings and a large plot of land in the Haroupomili area on which to build the massive project. It took just over 30 days to coordinate the architectural plan and obtain all the necessary permits for the modernisation of the buildings and the construction of new ones.
The cost of the project is estimated at €29 million.
It is worth noting that negotiations have been underway since 2020 to open a branch of the prestigious Lebanese University in the town. However, the Pafosse Municipality did not make its plans public until certain agreements had been reached with all parties involved in the project.
The American University of Beirut-Mediterraneo in Paphos will have three faculties: information technology, economics and business, and civil engineering. The university will have approximately 2,000 students.
