The modernization project of the Tassos Papadopoulos Olympic swimming pool in Geroskipou, Paphos, has entered an active phase of implementation. On Tuesday, January 27, the local municipality signed an official agreement for the major renovation of the sports facility with the contractor company Karpozilos Constructions & Developers Ltd.
The large-scale restoration works are expected to restore the pool’s former functionality and bring it into line with modern standards.
According to the terms of the contract, the cost of the works will amount to 493,854 euros excluding VAT. The project will be fully financed by the Cyprus Sports Organization, which emphasized the importance of the facility for the development of sports and an active lifestyle on the island.
What will change after the reconstruction
As part of the major renovation, the dismantling of all existing metal pool walls is provided and the construction of new concrete structures designed for long-term use. The pool perimeter and the surrounding surface, where water stagnation problems had previously been recorded, will also be restored. After the completion of construction works, a mandatory watertightness test of the pool basin will be carried out, new modern materials will be installed, and the engineering and electromechanical systems responsible for the stable and safe operation of the complex will be upgraded. The implementation period will be six months.
History and significance of the sports complex
The Olympic swimming pool in Geroskipou was built in 2005 and since its opening has become one of the key sports facilities in the region. It is part of the Geroskipou Sport Center, located just 3 km from the port of Paphos. The complex includes an outdoor 50-meter pool with 10 lanes, a gym, and other sports facilities. Powerful floodlights are installed for evening training sessions, and convenient, spacious parking is provided for visitors.
