The grandiose projct for the construction of a new ring road in Nicosia has entered the final stage of realisation.
This was announced by Cyfield head Kyriakos Chrysochous on Tuesday, 7 May.
He also denied rumours that his company had requested a new delay in the delivery of the project. He emphasised that the 7.5km-long mainline will be opened in August 2024. Chrysochous also criticised the bureaucratic delays, due to which he believes the work could have been completed twice as fast. He said that if the Public Works Department does not modernise the tender review processes, there will eventually be no Cypriot companies interested in participating in public projects.
We are very concerned about this. All companies that work with the public sector are losing money. You have no idea the difficulties we have encountered and the delays in project funding. Often six months pass before we are paid for the work done," said Chrysochus.
As a reminder, the project aims to reduce traffic within Nicosia's borders, reduce congestion at the entrance to the capital and stimulate economic activity.
The new road will have four lanes with a total length of 7.5 kilometres. In addition, the developer will equip 10 kilometres of adjacent tracks. The motorway will have four interchanges: two in the area of Idalio industrial zone, one in the area of Ceri industrial zone (near the Olympic shooting gallery) and a roundabout on Strovolos-Ceri Avenue. All work on the project is being carried out by the Cyfield construction company.
It is worth noting that the project is divided into five phases, the cost of which is estimated at 350 million euros. Once all works are completed, the new road will connect the main radial sections: Nicosia-Limassol, Nicosia-Kokkinotrimithya and the projected Nicosia-Palehori motorway.
