Larnaca municipality has announced the results of the re-tender for the reconstruction of the Acropolis and Alki squares, as well as the renovation of Ermou, Konstantinou Kalogera, Gladstonos, Louki Akrita and Orfeos streets in the city centre.
According to the mayor's office, Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Ltd won the tender.
A contract to carry out the work is expected to be signed next Thursday, 27 June. The event, which will include a presentation of the project, will start at 10.30am at Larnaca Town Hall.
The project to modernise Larnaca's central squares was developed by AF Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers. Their brief was to provide an aesthetic, functional and qualitative renewal of the area and to ensure the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles. The first tender for a contractor was held on 8 November 2023. However, this attempt was unsuccessful as the municipality received only one bid. The main reason for the failure was the low budget approved for the project. Therefore, the municipality had to increase it by 450,000 euros (from 3.1 million euros to 3.55 million euros) and announce a new tender. The cancellation of the first tender delayed the start of construction by several months.
This project will complete the modernisation, landscaping and traffic management in line with the Sustainable Mobility Plan for the city centre.
The two squares, together with projects planned for the commercial centre of Larnaca, are expected to become new reference points for the city.
The contract includes the improvement and reconstruction of existing roads by removing asphalt layers and laying cobblestones, widening pavements, upgrading the storm water system, underground infrastructure and utility networks. The area will also be landscaped, with the installation of fountains and modern urban equipment.
The project also aims at the aesthetic, functional and qualitative regeneration of the area in the centre of Larnaca. In addition to the two squares, Ermou, Konstantinou Kalogera, Gladstonos, Louki Akrita and Orfeos streets will be completely reconstructed.
