“Scala" municipal theater in Larnaca has been closed down

The building of the municipal theater "Scala" has been declared unfit for use.

The other day, the local mayor's office conducted a routine inspection, which revealed static problems in the structure of the facility.

In this regard, the theater had to be closed, and all performances scheduled for the near future were moved to other venues. Larnaca Mayor Andreas Viras said that the building is under the jurisdiction of the municipality, so the local authorities intend to make every effort to reopen it before the end of the year. In particular, the theater will undergo a comprehensive renovation and strengthen the walls. For this purpose, the municipality will announce a relevant tender. After summarizing the results of the tender, the winner will immediately start the renovation of the building. The mayor also added that after the static control inspection, the municipality had no other option but to close the theater.

We cannot put the employees and guests of the theater in danger, so it had to be closed," Viras said, noting that the main goal now is to renovate both the theater and its equipment.

Viras noted that great efforts are now being made to find space for the events previously planned at the Scala Theater. Most of them are expected to take place at the Municipal Theater of Oroklini, as well as at the Municipal Theater of Larnaca.

We are also in close contact with private universities as we want to move some events there," Viras added.

It should be noted that the Scala Theater is located at the intersection of Kiriakou Matsi and Simou Menardou streets. Here are staged mainly classical plays, usually in Greek, plays for children, hold movie screenings and stand-up performances.

Recall that recently Cyprus decided to check all buildings for earthquake resistance.

The question of the urgent need to check the technical condition of residential and commercial buildings was raised because of the powerful earthquake that occurred in Turkey, which affected thousands of people. By the way, many buildings in Cyprus have outlived not only their creators, but also witnessed entire eras. Nevertheless, the natural aging process inevitably changes their appearance. Time and the harsh southern climate do not spare real estate, especially those located in the historical centers of the major cities of the island.

The situation is aggravated by the fact that most property owners are not in a hurry to invest in their restoration. As a result, hundreds of buildings in Cyprus are in a state of disrepair.

It must be said that in the villages of Cyprus the situation is much worse than in urban centers. Thus, as of today, the Mountain Communities Development Authority's register of dangerous buildings lists 826 emergency facilities and 47 emergency mothballed buildings. A total of 112 mountain communities are included in the list, of which 12 are registered as monuments of architecture or endangered.
