The project to modernize the fishing harbor in Liopetri has finally gotten off the ground

The road to the fishing pier and the mouth of the Liopetri River is now open. The construction is part of a big project to improve the coast. The Cyprus Ministry of Interior is supporting this project.

Work on the project resumed in April this year, and last weekend, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou inspected it. He confirmed that the rest of the stages are also on schedule.

Why was the project delayed?

The minister said that work on the project started in 2020 and was set to be finished in 2023. However, serious delays and problems with the contractor forced the authorities to end the contract. The local authorities agreed to this decision. This decision allowed us to quickly finish a key part of the road in just a few months.

The next stage is the construction of mooring facilities

The ministry is currently accepting bids for the construction of mooring facilities, which are necessary for the fishing harbor to operate at full capacity. Construction will start in October and will last only a few months.

What was promised has become a reality. It took almost five years, but we can finally see the finished road. Now that access to the marina is open, we are confident that the rest of the work will be finished on schedule by the end of 2026, said Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zanetti.

Markos Koumis, the Deputy Mayor of Lyopetri, also expressed his gratitude. He said that finishing the road solves one of the main problems that fishermen had, which was that they had limited access to the mooring area.

The last step is to build places for fishermen to safely park their boats. We are confident that this work will begin soon and will be completed on schedule," Kumis concluded.

Project history

As a reminder, in November 2024, the contract with the contractor carrying out the renovation of the fishing pier in Liopetri was terminated. The main reason was that construction work was delayed often, and the completion date was moved back. Work to improve the Liopetri fishing harbor began in September 2020. The first stone in the foundation of the new port of Liopetri was laid by the President of Cyprus at the time, Nicos Anastasiades. At the ceremony, he said that the idea to modernize the harbor came from the late head of the Liopetri village council, Kyriakos Trisokkas. He said that the new port could change the life of the entire village.

The municipality of Liopetri and the government were worried that the work would never be finished because they had received many complaints from local residents. Because of this, the decision was made to end the contract and look for a new contractor. The restoration of the Liopetri riverbed is one of the biggest projects in the fishing sector in Cyprus. The main goal is to make the pier a modern, safe, and organized workplace for professional fishermen. According to the plan, the project includes the construction of:

  1. A bridge connects the two sides of the Liopetri River.
  2. There are more than 130 platforms, as well as new places for boats and motorboats to safely dock.
  3. There is a path around the outside of the area for people to walk or ride bikes.
  4. A place where people can learn about fishing.
  5. A building with many uses for offices.
  6. This is a place where fishermen can go.
  7. There are new parking spaces.
  8. It's a café and a restaurant.
  9. A place to look at and learn about nature.
  10. There is a room for recreation.
  11. A kiosk.

They also plan to build slipways for launching and lifting boats and motorboats, create an open area for sorting catches, and build storage facilities.
