The implementation of a large-scale project to modernize the area around the Liopetri River has been threatened with disruption.
According to the head of the local community, Vassos Manolis, the contractor has once again pushed back the deadline to July 2024. However, there is no certainty that the work will be completed by mid-summer.
Recall that the project started in September 2020 and was to be completed by March 2023. The construction company, Lois Builders, has already postponed the completion date several times. The City Planning Department approved the most recent schedule extension last December. It expires at the end of March.
I don't believe the project will be completed by summer. So far only about 55% of the work has actually been realized. I think it will be very difficult for the contractor to fulfill all obligations before the summer and put the facility into operation," Manolis said.
Manolis emphasized that the long delays in the implementation of the project have a negative impact on about 30 fishermen working in the area, as well as on the owners of two large restaurants, to which access is blocked.
It should be noted that the development of the project of modernization of the area of the river Liopetri was carried out by architectural offices Ieridis and Michael Architects - (IMA Architecture). The realization of the grandiose idea was entrusted to the construction company Lois Builders. About 11 million euros were allocated for the renovation.
The project includes:
- a bridge that will connect the two banks of the river;
- more than 130 platforms as well as new berths for the safe mooring of boats and launches;
- a bicycle and pedestrian path around the entire perimeter;
- a fisheries education center;
- a multi-purpose office building;
- service areas for fishermen;
- new parking lots;
- café-restaurant;
- natural observatories;
- restrooms;
- kiosk.
In addition, the project requires the developer to install slips for launching and hoisting boats and launches onto the water, and to create an outdoor catch sorting area and storage facilities.
