Nicosia Municipality has selected a contractor to modernise a linear park along the Pedieos River.
On Monday, 23 September, the mayor of the Cypriot capital, Haralambos Prondzos, signed the contract with the head of AF MODINOS AND SA VRAHIMIS ARCH ENG, Saverios Vrahimis.
Work on the large-scale project is expected to start as early as October 2024. It was decided to divide the renovation process into two phases. The first one will take about two years. The project, with an estimated cost of €24.5 million, will be co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the European Union Cohesion Fund (CF) and the European Union Recovery and Sustainability Fund.
The aim is for the Pedieos River to become a green axis on which to base the development of the municipalities involved and an example of sustainable urban development at both national and regional level.
The plan is to build 14 new bridges along the entire length of the river for the convenience of pedestrians and cyclists in the park. Besides, bicycle lanes will be renewed here, a playground will be installed, a place for dog walking will be equipped, places for recreation and active pastime will be created. Every 400 metres in the park there will be containers for separate waste collection. The existing lighting system in the park will be changed to LED and LEM (lighting management system).
In addition, a crisis management centre will be established in the park, which will operate in the SPE Strovolos building. Communication with the crisis management centre will be 24 hours a day, seven days a week. People will be able to contact it regarding criminal behaviour, injuries, flooding or fire.
