Soon the territory of the largest football stadium in Cyprus will turn into a green oasis.
As it became known on Monday, September 20, the modernization of the GSP Stadium in Nicosia begins from October 2021.
According to the city's release, the section between Grigori Afxentiou, Evagorou and Vasileos Pavlou Streets, east of the Ministry of Finance building, is about to undergo a radical transformation.
The municipality plans to create a modern city square, places for recreation, plant greenery around the stadium, as well as build a spacious two-level underground parking for 570 cars. Level A will accommodate 222 parking spaces, 21 of which will be reserved for people with disabilities, level B - 379 parking spaces, 30 of which will be reserved for people with disabilities. 7% of the total area (880 m2) will remain free of underground structures to allow for the planting of tall trees. Low trees and other vegetation will be planted over the underground parking facilities.
The new park will also include a cafe, restaurant, bookstore, art gallery, amphitheater, square, small waterfall and water wall.
It should be noted that now at the site of the GSP Stadium there is a parking lot, the area of which is 1.32 hectares.
The plot of the proposed development lies in the commercial development area EZ-d. According to the local plan of Nicosia, buildings with a maximum height of 8 floors (no more than 31 meters) can be erected in this area. In the immediate vicinity of the site is the Ministry of Finance, commercial and residential facilities, and a theater.
The total cost of the project is estimated at EUR 19.7 million + VAT.
The money for its implementation was allocated from the cohesion fund of the EU, the government budget and the municipality of Nicosia, within the framework of the regional development program for 2014-2020.
The construction period of the new park will be 24 months, after which the contractor company will undertake the obligation to maintain it for another 10 years.
