A major infrastructure project has been launched in Larnaca.
Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Ltd has started to modernise the city centre.
It will soon be transformed into a pedestrian-friendly space, with the emphasis on pedestrians, including people with disabilities, as well as cyclists and buses.
According to the release, the project includes the renovation of streets such as Ermou, Zinonos Kiteos, Dimitriou, Nikolaou Rossou, Kosma Lisioti, Kosta Savva, Nikolaou Lanithi, Mitsi, Evantias Pieridou, Filiu Zanetou, Galileou and Evriviadi. There will also be two new modern squares in Larnaca. One will be at the intersection of Rossou, Ermou and Zinonos streets and the other will be on Dimitriou street. It should be noted that all of the above streets will be pedestrianised.
The works concern the improvement and reconstruction of the existing roads by removing asphalt layers and laying paving stones, applying road markings, widening pavements, modernising the rainwater system and the underground infrastructure and utility networks. The upgrades will include planting trees and shrubs, installing street furniture and providing night-time street lighting.
As a reminder, the project to modernise the central squares of Larnaca was developed by AF Modinos and SA Vrahimis Architects and Engineers.
The company was tasked with carrying out the aesthetic, functional and qualitative renewal of the area and ensuring the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
The first tender for a contractor was held on 8 November 2023. However, this attempt was unsuccessful as the municipality received only one bid. The main reason for the failure was the low budget approved for the project. The municipality therefore had to increase the budget and issue a new tender, which was won by Miltiades Neophytou Civil Engineering Contractors & Developers Ltd.
According to preliminary data, around €14 million will be spent on the modernisation of the central part of Larnaca. The money for the project has been allocated from EU funds.
