The Akamas municipality intends to complete the construction of the longest coastal pedestrian walkway in Cyprus within a few months, which will start in the Peyia area and end in Kissonergi.
Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulidis inaugurated the first phase of the project in 2024. Construction is progressing at a very fast pace. Owners of local shops along the completed section are already reporting an increase in the number of Cypriot and foreign visitors using the new track for sports and outdoor activities.
It should be noted that the first completed phase of the project includes an amphitheatre, an outdoor gym, a basketball court, a kiosk and a playground. Incidentally, this 2-kilometre stretch is part of a larger coastal route, the total length of which will be 14 kilometres, from the Potim marina to the port of St George in Peyia.
According to the mayor of Akamas, Marinos Lambrou, the project has an estimated budget of €2.5 million. It is expected to be completed within the next 18 months.
It should be noted that the ambitious project is divided into 4 parts:
- The first phase involves the upgrading of a 5.1km stretch from the Kissonerga - Peyia motorway to the coastline of the eastern part of Coral Bay.
- The second phase involves the upgrading of a 1.6 km section from the western part of Coral Bay to the area of Sklinikari (Agios Georgios State Forest).
- The third phase involves the upgrading of a 3.6km section from the Sklinikari area (Agios Georgios State Forest) to the Sea Caves.
- The fourth phase involves the upgrading of a 3.2km section from the Sea Caves to the port of Agios Georgios, where the Peyia Fishermen's Shelter is located.
The plan also includes the construction of a large linear park along the waterfront, a cycle path, numerous recreational areas, an amphitheatre, an open-air gym, basketball and volleyball courts, a mini football pitch, a kiosk and children's playground, public toilets and showers.
In addition, modern lighting will be installed throughout the new promenade and a beautiful pedestrian bridge will be built between the banks of the Xeros River, connecting the promenade to the future Paphos Port.
