On Wednesday 14 August, Limassol Municipality announced the long-awaited tender for the improvement of the 'Linear Park along the Garillis riverbed'.
According to the terms of the tender, the winning contractor will be entitled not only to carry out the project, but also to maintain it for 12 months from the completion of all works.
The idea is to extend the linear park along Pallados, Dimokratias and Alexandrias streets, linking the Kato Polemidia neighbourhood to the coast. The project includes: widening of pavements, repair and asphalting of existing roads, construction of a continuous network of cycle lanes, pedestrian crossings with traffic lights, measures to reduce car traffic, laying of underground utilities, landscaping and gardening along the roads, installation of a new irrigation system, street lighting and benches, outdoor exercise equipment and creation of new parking spaces. In addition, the contractor undertakes to carry out regular pruning of trees and shrubs and to monitor the general cleanliness of the park.
As a reminder, Limassol Municipality has already embarked on other major projects that will be completed in the coming years. The most important of these are:
Eco-neighbourhoods
Over the next few years, Limassol's first eco-neighbourhoods will be developed in the districts of Zakaki, Omonia and Agios Nikolaos. The programme is expected to gradually cover all districts of the city. The project includes road improvements, the creation of cycle lanes and new car parks, as well as landscaping. The budget for each neighbourhood is approximately €1.2 million.
Affordable housing
Social housing will be built on three municipal plots - two in the Agios Nikolaos neighbourhood and one in the Agios Ioannis neighbourhood. The flats in the buildings will be rented at below market value to low-income citizens, young families, students and large families. The total area of the three sites is 41,725 m2. There will be a total of 600 apartments in the complexes.
Flood protection measures
The municipality, together with the Limassol Water Supply and Sewerage Board, has long promised to take measures against flooding. The project, which has an estimated budget of €35 million, includes the construction of drainage and water intake facilities in the districts of Agia Fila, Ekali, Agios Georgios Havouzas and others.
