The Cyprus Department of Environment has issued a permit for the construction of a new building of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics in Nicosia.
The construction of the building will begin in the near future and will last 30 months.
A new building will have an area of 10 thousand m2, and will be erected next to the existing building of the Institute on Iroon Avenue in the area of Agios Dometios.
The selected architectural project belongs to Ioannis Papadopoulos and Georgia Daskalakis.
The cost of the project, which includes the construction of a building together with modern equipment for research groups, is estimated at 31 million euros.
The financing will be provided by the European Investment Bank (ETEP) and the Government of Cyprus.
According to the release, the new building will have research and diagnostic laboratories, offices and training facilities, service and support areas, an indoor amphitheater, underground and outdoor parking, as well as an outdoor amphitheater. The building will be connected to the existing facilities of the Institute through a semi-underground tunnel at ground level.
The basement of the 7-story building will house mainly MRI and computed tomography laboratories. The rest will include office space, graduate school and exhibition space.
It is worth noting that the construction permit for the project was issued after a study conducted by the Department of Environment, which, after examining the characteristics and location of the building, decided that an Environmental Impact Assessment Study was not required.
