Larnaca is pursuing a programme of modernisation of its storm water system with a view to preventing potential flooding.
Iacovou Brothers Construction Ltd, the successful tenderer, has recently commenced the installation of a new rainwater system in the Livadia area.
In accordance with the contract, the works will encompass the area from St Savvas Church to the Larnaca-Dekelia coastal road. In addition to the installation of the stormwater system, the area will undergo a complete landscaping transformation. This will include the creation of new pedestrian and bicycle paths, the installation of modern street equipment, and the development of dedicated spaces for seasonal events.
The Deputy Mayor of Livadia, Marios Armenis, stated that the estimated cost of the project is approximately 4 million euros, with 3 million provided by the Restoration Fund and the remaining 1 million allocated by the municipality. The contract is set to last for 15 months, with completion expected in the second half of 2025.
It is worth noting that the modernisation of flood control channels in the Livadia district has been a recurring topic of discussion. During the winter months, this part of the city is often exposed to flooding, but this problem will soon be resolved.
It is worth noting that Larnaca enjoys a particularly sunny climate, with 300 days of sunshine per year. However, the rare winter storms that do occur cause significant inconvenience to the local population.
The lack of an effective storm water drainage system is the main cause of the constant flooding in Larnaca. In order to address this issue, the local Town Hall launched a flood alleviation project in June 2023. Since the programme was launched, three tenders have been issued, with two already successfully executed.
