Iconic Thalassaki Café on Limassol Seafront Has Closed

The reason for the suspension of operations of the Thalassaki cafe was a court decision in favor of the local municipality. It is known that the city authorities plan to announce a tender in the near future to find new operators.

Court decision and return of the premises to the municipality

The property belongs to the Limassol municipality. After lengthy legal proceedings, the court finally recognized the municipality’s right to reclaim the property. The cafe operator is required to vacate the premises based on a court order.

At the same time, the court of first instance ordered the payment of a significant amount to the municipality for alleged lost rental income. It is expected that this decision will be appealed in court; however, the vacating of the property has already come into force.

The history of the dispute dates back to 2005, when a contract was concluded after the reconstruction of the Akti Olympion seafront. The initial agreement provided for a 3+3 year lease scheme, but the contract was subsequently extended multiple times and effectively remained in force until 2026.

End of an era after 20 years of operation

Thalassaki opened in 2005 and became the first cafe on the renovated Limassol seafront. Thanks to its location right by the sea, it quickly became a favorite place for locals, especially winter swimmers.

For many residents, the cafe was associated with affordable prices and a democratic atmosphere. Amid the rapid rise in the cost of living and the increasing number of premium establishments along the Limassol coastline, Thalassaki maintained a more “people-oriented” character, which created a special attachment among regular guests. The last day of operation of the cafe was February 16. The premises are now sealed.

New tender and possible renovation

Authorities are conducting a technical assessment of the condition of the property. After the inspection is completed, an open tender will be announced for new operators. According to information from the municipality, the possibility is being discussed of including clauses in the tender conditions regulating the maximum price of basic goods, such as coffee and water.

City authorities believe that the new lease agreement will make it possible to establish a market price for the use of one of the most valuable municipal properties on the coastline. At the same time, the option of updating the interior and infrastructure is being considered in order to bring the premises in line with modern service and safety standards.

Renewal amid the development of the Limassol seafront

The seafront near Akti Olympion beach remains one of the most popular recreation areas in Limassol and across Cyprus. In recent years, the area has been actively developing: new restaurants, sports facilities, and public spaces have appeared. The municipality aims to maintain a balance between commercial attractiveness and accessibility for city residents.

The issuance of permits and the completion of the legal procedure open the way for the relaunch of the iconic place in an updated format. It is expected that after the tender process and possible renovation, Thalassaki or a new establishment in its place will once again become a point of attraction on the map of Limassol, while maintaining its connection with the sea and the history of the seafront.
