The Municipality of Strovolos has presented its construction and redevelopment plan, with works set to begin on 12 January 2026 as part of a major project to renew the district’s historic center. Mayor Stavros Stavrinides emphasized that this is a symbolic project that will radically transform the appearance and functionality of this part of Nicosia. He noted that the municipality is placing special emphasis on the quality of implementation to ensure that the renovated center becomes not only a landmark for Strovolos but also one of Cyprus’s model urban spaces.
During the presentation, municipal engineer Athanasios Kolivas outlined the stages of the works and the construction timeline. Residents and business owners were able to ask questions about how the reconstruction will affect their daily lives, access to buildings, and commercial activity within the project area.
What will change in the historic core of Strovolos
The redevelopment project, with a budget of €5.6 million, covers the area surrounding two key churches — Panagia Chryseleousa and Saint George. These sites hold significant cultural and architectural value, making their harmonious integration into a modern urban environment one of the project’s main objectives.
The upgrade includes creating safer and more accessible pedestrian routes, installing new infrastructure networks, improving the visual character of the public spaces, and introducing measures to reduce flood risk. Particular attention is being given to accessibility for people with limited mobility, in line with European standards for inclusive urban development.

European support and future prospects
The project is being carried out under the EU Cohesion Policy programme ΘΑλΕΙΑ 2021–2027 and is co-funded by the European Union. This participation ensures high-quality construction, the use of modern materials and technologies, and long-term infrastructure durability. In recent years, the EU has actively supported urban center revitalization projects in Cyprus, as they promote tourism, enhance urban mobility, and help preserve cultural heritage.
The redevelopment of the historic center of Strovolos will be not only an infrastructure upgrade but also a social project — creating a more comfortable environment for residents and an attractive space for visitors. Upon completion, the area will be able to host new cultural events, attract local businesses, and draw more tourists, strengthening its role within the wider Nicosia metropolitan area.
