The municipal authorities of Strovolos have officially confirmed the start date for a major redevelopment of the city’s historic center. Construction works are scheduled to begin on 12 January 2026. This is one of the most significant urban projects in recent years and is expected to transform the old core of the area and restore its role as a vibrant public space.
When the Works Begin and the City’s Goals
Strovolos Mayor Stavros Stavrinidis announced that construction will commence on 12 January 2026. The main objective of the redevelopment is to revitalize the historic core through upgraded infrastructure and the introduction of modern urban planning solutions. The renewed center is expected to once again attract former residents of the area as well as younger generations, strengthening its social and cultural significance.
A New Look for the Historic Center and the “Slow City” Concept
The project will be implemented in phases and предусматривает a comprehensive upgrade of the area. The historic center will be equipped with a rainwater drainage system, all utility networks and cables will be moved underground, and street space will be unified and made safer for pedestrians. Landscaping works, the creation of public squares, and improvements around the churches of Panagia Chryseleousa and Saint George are planned, with particular attention given to the preservation of cultural heritage.
The area will operate according to the “slow city” concept, featuring reduced speed limits, restrictions on through traffic, full accessibility for people with disabilities and elderly residents, as well as lower noise levels and reduced harmful emissions. This approach aligns with current European trends in sustainable urban development.

Project Funding and Its Importance for Strovolos
The total cost of the redevelopment is estimated at €5.5 million, of which €4.9 million will be financed through European funds under the “THALEIA 2021–2027” Cohesion Policy. This is the first project implemented by the Strovolos Municipality with the support of the European Union. City officials describe it as an important catalyst for development, urban modernization, and increased attractiveness of the area for both residents and businesses.
Traffic Changes During Construction
During the first phase, which will last around three months, construction works will affect Agia Marina Street. Access during this period will be restricted and largely limited to local residents. The redevelopment will then continue on Archbishop Kyprianou Street, where temporary traffic management measures will be introduced to minimize inconvenience for motorists and pedestrians.
The municipality emphasizes that the renovation of Strovolos’s historic center represents a long-term investment in urban quality of life and an important step toward shaping a modern and sustainable city.
