The renovation project of the Municipal Sports Center in Strovolos, Nicosia, is nearing completion.
The first phase of the reconstruction is scheduled to be finished by June 13, 2025, with a total budget exceeding €3.8 million.
The project aims to create a modern and user-friendly space for the residents of the capital, in line with the district’s growing needs. As Strovolos Mayor Stavros Stavrinides noted, the decision for a full-scale upgrade was made due to the increasing population and rising interest in sports.
The official opening of the renovated facility will take place on June 23.
During the ceremony, the sports center will be named in honor of Glafcos Clerides, former President of the Republic of Cyprus. Parliament Speaker Annita Demetriou will attend the event.
The municipality invites everyone to join in commemorating the late president and supporting the advancement of sports in the area.
Phase One of the Renovation Includes:
- Laying new surfacing on the running track
- Installing a long jump pit
- Constructing four new courts (two for basketball, two for padel tennis)
- Renovating the main entrance
The budget for this phase is €500,000, with an additional €500,000 plus VAT allocated for sports equipment.
Some facilities — such as the tennis and mini-football courts — are already available for rental, while others remain closed until all work is completed.
Phase Two Will Bring More Extensive Changes:
- Construction of a rest area
- Building new spectator stands
- Renovation of toilets and changing rooms
- Creation of a new tennis court
- Expansion of the parking area
- Establishment of a separate emergency access
- Installation of outdoor gym equipment under shelters
- Construction of a service road
- Setup of an award ceremony area for athletes
The budget for the second phase is around €2.2 million plus VAT, though the final amount may be subject to change.
The sports center's operations are overseen by Nicosia municipal staff. The Tennis Academy and Football Academy, both of which have been training children and adults for over a decade, will continue their activities on site.
