The Government of Cyprus has taken an important step in implementing the project to build a new medical center in the western part of the island. On Wednesday, March 11, the Council of Ministers approved the procedure for the expropriation of land plots on which a new hospital will be built in Polis Chrysochous.
The territory in question has a total area of about 21,000 m2. According to the Minister of Health, Neophytos Charalambidis, the decision was made within the framework of the previously approved project implementation schedule. He emphasized that the construction and launch of the new hospital will be an important step in improving the healthcare system in the region and will significantly increase the quality of medical services for residents of the northwestern part of the island.
Why the region needs a new hospital
Local authorities have long raised the issue of building a new medical institution. According to the local mayor, Yiotis Papachristofi, the existing hospital was built during the period of British colonial administration and no longer meets modern medical and infrastructure requirements.
The head of the municipality noted that the new hospital will become an important project for the entire region, as it will provide residents of the city and nearby villages with modern medical services.
Construction timeline and government support
According to current plans, the laying of the first stone of the new hospital should take place in January 2027. Completion of construction and commissioning of the facility are expected by the end of 2028. The project is being implemented with the support of the country’s president, Nikos Christodoulides, who, according to local authorities, is actively promoting infrastructure development in the regions.
The Ministry of Health emphasizes that the new medical center will become part of the modernization of the national healthcare system and will expand the range of medical services in the Paphos region.
Development of the region and growing demand for medical services
The western part of the island, including the Polis Chrysochous area, has gradually developed in recent years as a tourist and residential destination. The number of new projects in real estate and tourism is increasing here, which leads to population growth and a rising flow of visitors.
