German Oncology Center in Limassol to Undergo Major Expansion

€2.4 million will be invested in the project.

The German Oncology Center in Limassol plans to expand its infrastructure to improve patient services and working conditions for staff. The project will be carried out in the Municipality of Amathus, in the administrative area of Agios Athanasios.

According to the opinion issued by the Department of Environment, the new buildings will be constructed on the site of existing parking areas. This will allow the center to expand without additional development of previously undisturbed parts of the site. The project includes:

  1. new medical offices and staff facilities;
  2. relocation of part of the kitchen infrastructure and storage facilities to the underground level;
  3. additional rooms for the dermatology department and MRI facilities;
  4. a daycare center for employees’ children and, if necessary, patients’ families;
  5. 7 apartments for visiting specialists and, if necessary, relatives of patients;
  6. expansion of the road network and parking areas.

Project Details

According to the plans, apartments for visiting specialists will be located on the first floor of the new building. A total of 7 apartments are planned: 6 one-bedroom units and one two-bedroom unit.

The daycare center will accommodate 24 infants and 32 preschool-age children, for a total capacity of 56. It is intended primarily for the children of center employees, although patients’ families may also be able to use the facility if needed. This infrastructure is expected to help attract international specialists and make it easier for medical staff to organize their work.

The existing complex covers 22,300 square meters. Of this, 4,700 square meters is usable building space, while 17,600 square meters is occupied by roads and parking areas.

As part of the expansion, approximately 1,700 m2 of additional indoor space and 850 m2 of underground areas are planned. The documents list the total area of the new buildings as 2,560 m2. The project also provides for the construction of 1,280 km2 of new roads and parking areas. A separate part of the project concerns the existing wastewater treatment plant. It will include 109 m2 of underground and semi-underground facilities beneath the existing parking areas in the western part of the complex. The estimated cost of the project is €2.4 million.

Why the Center Needs to Expand

The German Oncology Center provides specialized medical care and can serve up to 170 patients per day. In addition, outpatients visit the center for diagnostic examinations, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, brachytherapy, and nuclear medicine procedures.

The center employs around 60 scientific, medical, nursing, and administrative staff. The infrastructure expansion is therefore expected to help meet growing demand for medical space, patient services, and wastewater treatment, including wastewater generated by medical activities.

The environmental authority approved the project on the basis that the new facilities will replace existing parking areas rather than occupy additional natural land. This will allow the medical complex and its supporting infrastructure to expand while limiting the environmental impact.
