A groundbreaking ceremony was held in Limassol on Saturday 11 May to mark the start of construction of TEPAC's new student accommodation in the Kato Polemidia area.
The event was attended by the President of Cyprus, Nicos Christodoulides, and other senior officials.
Our aim is to further improve higher education in Cyprus. This is one of the seven areas in which we plan to invest actively. We believe that this can significantly improve the economic prospects of our country. Today's modest ceremony is a testament to the dynamic development of the Cyprus University of Technology and the recognition it has received in recent years, establishing itself as a popular institution of higher education in Cyprus and beyond. With seven different faculties, dozens of study programmes at all levels and thousands of students and alumni, the university can boast significant achievements in research and academic excellence, as well as social contribution. And for me, it is no coincidence that it is already ranked very high in prestigious world rankings and will be a full member of the European University Network from 2020," Christodoulides said during the ceremony.
At the end of his speech, the President assured that the government will support every initiative of both TEPAC and the rest of the higher education institutions in Cyprus. Addressing the Mayor of Kato Polemidia, he said that the municipality's request for an area for the construction of a road around the campus had received a positive response.
.
It should be recalled that the campus project was designed by E. Papachristou LLC.
The firm's work won the competition organised by TEPAC. The E. Papachristou LLC project was considered the best among the 42 applications submitted. According to the idea, the new dormitories will be built in the former settlement of Verengaria. They will be able to accommodate around 500 students. In addition to living quarters, the buildings will have several laboratories and halls. The buildings will be surrounded by a number of other public facilities designed to create a comfortable atmosphere for the students.
The cost of the project is estimated at 50 million euros. The facility is expected to be completed in 2025.
Verengaria is a former village that is part of the municipality of Kato Polemidia. The local authorities intend to transform it into a campus. The village covers an area of 26 hectares.
