The fourth and final phase of a large-scale project to reconstruct and unify Acropolis and Alki squares, as well as the adjacent streets, has started in Larnaca. This was reported by the local municipality. According to the city hall, construction work will last approximately 4 months.
The renewal of central Larnaca is considered one of the key infrastructure projects of recent years. Its goal is to create a modern public space, improve the road network, and increase comfort for residents, tourists, and businesses.
Which streets will be closed and how traffic will change
As part of the fourth stage, reconstruction will affect the southern part of Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue and a section of Konstantinou Kalogera Street. During the works, traffic has been changed. Cars traveling from the Larnaca police headquarters toward the old city hospital are being redirected to the already renovated northern part of Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue, which has temporarily become an upward traffic lane. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction must detour via Konstantinou Zachariadi, Kyriakou Matsi, and Kimonos streets.
At the same time, in a few days drivers moving upward along Grigoris Afxentiou Avenue will be allowed to turn right onto Louki Akrita Street — the road passing in front of the Alki building. Cars from Louki Akrita Street will be able to enter the avenue only with a right turn and in the direction of the old hospital.
Municipal authorities emphasize that throughout the construction period the affected road sections will be completely closed to traffic. At the same time, measures will be taken to ensure safe pedestrian access to residential buildings and commercial premises.
What the reconstruction will bring to central Larnaca
The reconstruction of Acropolis and Alki squares is not only an update of the road surface. The project includes improvement of public spaces, modernization of engineering networks, better lighting, and the creation of a more convenient urban environment. Authorities expect that after completion of the works, central Larnaca will become more attractive for walking, business development, and hosting city events.
As the work progresses, the municipality will publish new detailed information about possible changes in traffic organization. Drivers are advised to plan routes in advance and take temporary restrictions into account. Completion of the final stage of reconstruction is expected by summer, allowing the renewed city center to fully welcome the 2026 tourist season.
