The Cyprus Environment Ministry has received an application to build a 147-metre-high Ferris wheel in the old port of Limassol.
The project is called Hyperion and has been designed by PPA Architects.
As part of this initiative, an environmental study was carried out on the impact of the facility on the environment. Recently, the agency has put the project out for public discussion. Until 7 December 2024, anyone can express their opinion on the desirability of building a large facility.
According to the proposal, the base of the Ferris wheel will consist of three levels connected by a spiral ramp.
The ground floor will have commercial areas and a large digital aquarium with an area of 835 m2. The first floor will have a children's area, sanitary facilities, exhibition areas and offices. The third floor will include
Food sales area, facility operation control areas, booth entrance area and event space. The structure will have a total of 36 cabins with a capacity of 6 to 12 people.
Hyperion is designed to be 6 times lighter and 4 times stronger than the famous London Eye. The construction technology of the ride will fully comply with global safety standards and will be able to compete with similar projects in its category.

According to the developers, the Hyperion project will not only bring economic, cultural and social benefits to Limassol, but will also usher in a new stage in the city's cultural and technological development. The big wheel will become a new symbol and landmark of Limassol and will help to attract tourists from all over the world to the city.
It is worth noting that the cumulative impact in terms of water, electricity and waste generation will be low, as the area where the facility will be built is fully developed and has all the necessary infrastructure to meet its needs. The developer plans to lease the land from the Cyprus Ports Authority for the construction and operation of a mixed-use complex consisting of a Ferris wheel and named recreational areas on land that will be created by an embankment on the south side of the marina. The implementation of the proposed project is expected to create new jobs, strengthen the region and improve its socio-economic character.
The cost of the project is estimated at €50 million.
