The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in Larnaca has planned all the main steps to set up the School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development for fall 2025.
The school's management recently announced this.
Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides presented the educational project last March during a regional meeting in Larnaca. The school is expected to strengthen Larnaca's role as a center for science, sustainable development, and growth.
Currently, the project requires legislative approval; the school's name must be officially added to the Cyprus Technological University's (TEPAK) charter. This can only be achieved through a vote in Parliament. However, since MPs will leave for their summer recess on July 15 and there are no unforeseen circumstances, consideration of the issue will likely be postponed until September.
It is worth mentioning that the project has already passed all internal approval procedures.
In April 2024, the TEPAK rectorate unanimously approved establishing a School of Marine Sciences, Technology, and Sustainable Development. Later, the university council also expressed its full support. Thus, the academic and administrative part of the process on the university's end has been completed. All necessary documents have been submitted to the state authorities. Further progress depends on the Ministry of Education, the Attorney General's Office, and ultimately, Parliament.
Previously, the President of Cyprus stated that the school could accept its first students as early as September 2027. However, due to delays in the legislative process, these deadlines may be revised. Not only does legal approval lie ahead, but also the recruitment of teaching staff, the development of curricula, and the preparation of infrastructure.
In the meantime, the municipality of Larnaca is negotiating with Greek universities to establish certain faculties in the city. According to official sources, the city authorities hope to make an announcement soon. Larnaca aims to strengthen its status as a regional center of education and science with a focus on marine sciences, environmental sustainability, and innovative technologies.
