On Thursday 5 December, a new mobile application called Digital Citizen (Digital Citizen or Ψηφιακός Πολίτης) was launched in Cyprus.
This was announced by the island nation's president, Nikos Christodoulidis, on his Facebook page.
A new era has dawned: simple, easy, digital,' Christodoulidis said.
He stressed that the launch of this programme marks the beginning of 'a new era of digital services for the population and businesses'. It is worth noting that the Digital Citizen application was developed on the initiative of the Cypriot government. It allows people to create and store official documents, which are the analogue of paper versions, in digital format.
Currently available on Digital Citizen are: identity cards, driving licences and vehicle inspection certificates. However, the list is expected to expand significantly soon. Many procedures will be simplified and citizens will no longer need to carry paper copies of documents.
You can download it from Google Play or the App Store. Registration is then required.
To use the app, citizens need to have an active and certified profile on the online public services portal CY Login, which provides access to government systems and services. The app also requires 'two-factor authentication' to be activated in the citizen's CY Login profile. The authenticity of all digital documents can be easily verified by scanning the QR code.
Important! It is possible to issue digital documents provided that citizens have their paper originals.Documents issued through the Digital Citizen mobile application are only valid for official use within the country. They cannot be used as international travel documents.
For more information on the new application and the process of issuing digital documents, please visit www.digital-citizen.gov.cy. The website also includes a technical support service where citizens can ask questions about the use of the application and the creation and management of individual documents.
