On Monday 31 March, the Cypriot Ministry of Digital Policy announced the expansion of the functionality of the Digital Citizen mobile application.
It is now available to all citizens and residents over the age of 14. The application can be downloaded for free on Android and iOS devices via Google Play and the App Store.
Digital Citizen allows you to store digital versions of official documents that are fully equivalent to their paper counterparts. The system ensures that when you need to verify your identity, you don't have to carry physical documents with you - just open the app and present them on your smartphone screen. It is important to note that digital documents do not replace a passport and cannot be used for international travel.
To activate Digital Citizen, users must register and confirm their identity through the CY Login service. This requires the creation of an account on the official website of the Cyprus Government cge.cyprus.gov.cy.
For citizens under the age of 18, the registration process takes place through the Citizen Service Centres (KEP) as follows:
- Parents or guardians must make an appointment at one of these centres.
- The visit can be replaced by an online interview via the MyGovLive service (www.mygovlive.gov.cy).
- During the procedure, one of the parents must be present with an identity card.
It should be noted that digital copies of documents are only made if the citizen has the original paper document. The application is protected by a modern verification system that excludes the possibility of digital forgery. More information can be found on the official website www.digital-citizen.gov.cy.
The introduction of Digital Citizen is a further step towards the digitalisation of public services in Cyprus, allowing citizens to use documents in a convenient and secure format.
