On Monday 15 July, the Cyprus Public Works Department announced a tender for the next phase of the construction of the Nicosia district road.
According to the department, the new phase includes the construction of a 2,150 metre long four-lane motorway with a 2.6 metre wide divided raised island, as well as the construction of a roundabout at the junction with the Lakatamia-Deftera road (E902), a bridge over the Pedios river, two flyovers and link roads at the junction with the Nicosia-Palehori section (E903) at the entrance to the village of Antoupolis, and the repair of the local road network, which are part of the overall plan.
In addition to the above, this phase includes the laying of a storm water drainage system, the installation of EAC high voltage transmission network equipment, irrigation systems, the installation of modern road lighting at junctions, landscaping, road markings and other related works.
The approximate cost of the works is estimated at €35.8 million. Applications from interested parties will be accepted until 20 September 2024. The Agency will then examine the documents submitted and select the winner. The intention is to sign a contract with the winning contractor towards the end of January 2025. The project implementation period will be 36 months. If there are no force majeure circumstances, all works will be completed by the end of January - beginning of February 2028.
It should be noted that the first phase of the implementation of the major Nicosia ring road project is experiencing significant delays. Despite all the assurances of the contracting company, it recently submitted a new request to postpone the delivery of the project until August 5.
As a reminder, the project is aimed at reducing traffic within the administrative boundaries of Nicosia, easing congestion at the entrance to the capital and stimulating economic activity.
The new road will have four lanes and a total length of 7.5 kilometres. In addition, the developer will construct 10 kilometres of adjacent lanes. The motorway will have four interchanges: two in the area of the Idalion industrial zone, one in the area of the Tseri industrial zone (near the Olympic shooting range) and a roundabout at Strovolos-Tseri avenue. All the works on the project will be carried out by the construction company Cyfield.
It is worth noting that the project is divided into five phases, with an estimated cost of 350 million euros. Once all the works have been completed, the new road will connect the main radial sections: Nicosia-Limassol, Nicosia-Kokkinotrimithia and the planned Nicosia-Palaiochori motorway.
