Users outside Cyprus will no longer be able to pay taxes via the TaxisNet portal.
On Wednesday 23 October, the Tax Department announced the restrictions for security reasons. It turned out that the main reason was the recent cyber attacks on other government departments and banking institutions on the island.
As part of the changes, the department said that citizens who are currently abroad and do not have time to file their tax returns by 31 October will be able to do so later without paying a penalty. That is, if the system is not restored soon.
It is worth remembering that the tax return for the year 2023 must be completed by individuals whose income (before tax deductions) exceeds 19,500 euros, as well as by self-employed persons working without audited accounts.
In addition, individuals with income exceeding 19.5 thousand euros from rental property, royalties, pensions, dividends, interest and securities are required to file a tax return.
Tax returns can only be filed electronically. To do this, you must first register at the tax office in your place of residence (personal attendance is required), where the official responsible will issue you with a Tax Identification Code (TIC) consisting of eight digits and a Latin letter (e.g. 9999999999X).
The applicant will receive a 17-digit unique registration number. The applicant must then create an account on the TaxisNet portal and complete the declaration. Instructions on how to register on the TaxisNet portal in English (in PDF format).
It should be noted that if a tax resident of the Republic of Cyprus whose income exceeds 19.5 thousand euros per year does not file a tax return on time, he will be charged a penalty of 100 euros plus 5% of the amount of tax he is liable to pay for the year.
