The results of the tender for the construction of the new school of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) in Larnaca have been announced. Five construction companies participated in the bidding process, but the best—and at the same time the lowest—financial offer was submitted by CYFIELD CONSTRUCTION LIMITED. The contract is valued at €10,934,000. For comparison, the project's initial estimated budget was €11,950,000.
The Larnaca Municipality Procurement Committee made its final decision on August 12, 2026. Construction work is scheduled to begin on October 1, 2026, and the contract duration is set at 18 months. A groundbreaking ceremony, attended by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, will also take place in Larnaca on October 30.
A Large University Complex Near Mackenzie
The school will be built behind the large parking area along the Mackenzie waterfront, on a site adjacent to the former Larnaca Airport. The project is being commissioned by the Municipality of Larnaca, while funding is being provided through an existing CUT loan from the European Investment Bank.
The complex will include a two-story building featuring amphitheaters, lecture halls, classrooms, offices for academic and administrative staff, a conference hall, a reception area, sanitary facilities, and storage spaces. A separate one-story building will house laboratories. The surrounding area will also be landscaped and enhanced with green spaces.
The new school will accommodate two academic departments: the Department of Marine Science and Technology and the Department of Sustainable Development. Once the project reaches full capacity, it will be able to serve approximately 500 students.
The First Students Are Expected in Autumn 2028
If construction proceeds according to schedule, the new building is expected to be completed within 18 months of the start of construction. CUT and the Municipality of Larnaca expect the first students to begin their studies there in the autumn of 2028.
The creation of the new school is expected to strengthen Larnaca's position as a center for education and research in marine sciences, technology, and sustainable development. The university also plans to expand its cooperation with research institutions and international organizations.
At the same time, the municipality is searching for a second site for the construction of student housing near the future school. In addition, plans are already being developed for the first student residences, which the Nikos and Despina Pattichis Foundation intends to build on its property on Pavlou Valdaseridi Street, close to the city center.
The selection of CYFIELD CONSTRUCTION LIMITED as the contractor therefore marks the transition of the CUT school project in Larnaca from the preparation and tender stages to the actual construction phase.
