The last installations in the Larnaca-Dekelia coastal strip, where a large integrated development is planned, will soon be removed.
It was recently announced that the Cyprus Environment Ministry has issued a permit for the demolition of an LPG cylinder repair and maintenance facility in the area.
The cost of the work is estimated at €100,000. The whole process is expected to take about four months, after which an area of 39,763 m2 will be released, of which 5,108 m2 was occupied by buildings. The refinery itself will be relocated to the area of Vasilikos (Limassol) in accordance with the joint decision of the state and the oil companies to relocate all the facilities for the production of petroleum products and to clean up the area.
It should be noted that the area to be demolished is located in the eastern part of the coastal strip, on the main Larnaca-Dekelia road, within the administrative boundaries of the Livadia municipality. The main activities of the factory were sandblasting, cylinder maintenance and painting, electric welding and autogenous welding. In addition to the workshops, the factory included administrative offices, a restaurant/dining room and sanitary facilities.
The Department emphasised that the released site was not in a migratory bird use area, was not part of the Natura 2000 network, had no water bodies on the site and did not cross a registered watercourse. Therefore, there are no obstacles to its further development.
As a reminder, the removal of all undesirable elements in the suburbs of Larnaca will free up about three kilometres of coastline.
The new multi-million dollar project includes the creation of a promenade along the Larnaca-Dekelia road, a linear park along the coastline and a multifunctional ecological axis on Psiloritis Street. In addition, the municipality plans to clean up the artificial canals that flow from Livadia and the Archangelos Kamitsis river, which is located near Jumbo. On the land that will be cleared, the council plans to create a garden city called 'Arkolivada' and to develop the area with residential and tourist neighbourhoods.
