The Municipality of Paralimni and Deryneia has announced its intention to modernise the central part of the village of Frenaros.
In particular, a representative of the municipality said that the authority was preparing to launch a tender as early as October this year. The whole process is expected to take about 2 months, after which the results will be summarised and the contractor will be able to proceed with the project. This should happen by January 2025 at the latest.
The cost of rebuilding the traditional core of the Frenaros community is estimated at 1.55 million euros. Part of the funding for the project will be provided by the local municipality and part by the Cypriot government.
The main objective set by the municipality is to achieve the aesthetic, functional and qualitative renewal of the area and to ensure the smooth and safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles. The project includes the reconstruction of existing roads by removing asphalt layers and laying cobblestones, widening pavements, upgrading the storm water system, underground infrastructure and utility networks. The area in the centre of the village will also be landscaped, with the installation of fountains and modern urban equipment.
It should be remembered that Frenaros is a large village in the neighbourhood of Famagusta. It is one of the sixteen villages of the Free Districts of Famagusta and is located about 10 km south of Famagusta town at an average altitude of 75 metres above sea level. The fertile soil, combined with the availability of water, has made Frenaros a traditional agricultural village, where potatoes and watermelons are the main crops. The heart of the village is its central area. Here you will find the old church of Archangel Michael, the church of St Andronikos and the church of St Marina.
