Area Around Paralimni Lake to Be Upgraded

It recently became known that the Paralimni-Deryneia municipality is preparing a large-scale project to improve the area around Lake Paralimni. The municipality plans to transform the natural zone into a convenient space for walking, ecotourism, and wildlife observation.

The project includes creation of new pedestrian routes and bicycle paths around the perimeter of the lake. Special observation platforms and an additional observation tower will also appear, from which visitors will be able to watch birds and the nature of the lake.

Currently, municipal authorities are holding consultations with government services and experts to prepare the necessary environmental studies and determine the exact project budget. According to preliminary estimates, the cost of the work may amount to several million euros. Funding is planned to be obtained from European Union funds that support environmental and tourism initiatives.

Ecological value of Lake Paralimni

Lake Paralimni is considered one of the last remaining wetlands in Cyprus. Such natural ecosystems play an important role in maintaining biodiversity and are important stopovers for migrating birds.

In 2009, the lake received protected area status after being included in the European conservation network Natura 2000. This status means that the territory has special ecological significance and is under the protection of European legislation.

One of the main reasons for protecting the lake is the rare species of water snake Natrix natrix cypriaca. This subspecies lives only in Cyprus and is considered one of the unique representatives of the local fauna. Preserving the natural habitat for such species is one of the tasks of the island’s environmental policy.

A place for hundreds of bird species

Lake Paralimni is also known as an important ornithological zone. According to the environmental organization BirdLife Cyprus, 186 species of birds have been recorded in this area.

Some of them live here permanently, while others use the lake as a temporary stop during seasonal migrations between Europe, Asia, and Africa. In autumn and winter, large groups of migratory birds that come to Cyprus for wintering can be observed here.

Of particular value to ornithologists are species under state protection, including the northern lapwing, sandpiper, and little ringed plover. Thanks to the presence of such species, the area is of great importance for preserving the biodiversity of the entire region.

A new boost for ecotourism in Cyprus

The development of infrastructure around the lake should make this natural area more accessible for residents and tourists. In recent years, ecological tourism has been actively developing in Cyprus — travel that allows people to explore the island’s nature without harming the environment.

The creation of walking routes and observation platforms will allow visitors to observe birds and nature without disturbing the fragile ecosystem of the lake. Similar projects have already been successfully implemented in other natural areas of the country.

Authorities believe that improving the area around Lake Paralimni will help attract more tourists to the region while also strengthening the protection of one of the most unique natural ecosystems of Cyprus.
