The Amathus municipality is consistently implementing a large-scale project to create a continuous pedestrian and cycling route along its entire coastline. In the future, it will become part of a unified coastal network and connect with similar paths in the municipalities of Limassol and Kourion, as provided by the city’s Comprehensive Master Development Plan.
According to the Mayor of Amathus, Kyriakos Xydias, the project is of strategic importance not only for local residents but for the entire region, as it creates a modern, safe, and environmentally friendly public space along the sea.
Dasoudi section approaches the finish line
A working meeting was recently held with representatives of urban planning authorities dedicated to the reconstruction of the route section from the Crowne Plaza hotel to the Atlantica Miramare Beach hotel. This segment runs mainly through the popular coastal area of Dasoudi in Germasogeia and had remained at the planning stage for many years.
As the mayor noted, construction can begin only after approvals are obtained from the Water Development Department and the Department of Environment. Project funding has already been included in the state budget for 2026. At the same time, the Land Department has taken responsibility for completing all procedures. The tender for the works is expected to be announced before the end of the current year. The delay in announcing the tender was due to the decision to implement the project in full rather than limiting it only to the Germasogeia section as previously planned.
The most complex section and university assistance
The most problematic part of the route remains the segment from Atlantica Miramare Beach to Guaba Beach Bar, where the coastal zone of Agios Tychonas begins. Its design has not yet been completed; however, according to the mayor, work on the design will begin simultaneously with the announcement of the tender for the neighboring section.
To accelerate the process, the municipality is involving not only government services but also three leading universities — the University of Cyprus, the Cyprus University of Technology, and Frederick University. The municipality has strategic urban planning agreements with these institutions.
Additional difficulties are created by private developments and facilities located within the coastal protection zone that effectively block the path of the future route. These issues are planned to be resolved at the design stage, although the mayor describes this segment as the most challenging in the entire project.
Renovation of the Agios Tychonas route and safety
Special attention is being given to the Agios Tychonas coastal route, which the Mayor of Amathus calls one of the municipality’s key assets. Shortly before Christmas, an updated modernization plan was presented to Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki together with Professor Loukas Dimitriou from the University of Cyprus.
The project includes a complete reconstruction of the existing path without changing its width. Plans include eliminating wear accumulated over years of use, improving safety levels, and making the section more convenient for pedestrians and cyclists. The project is already prepared, and the municipality is awaiting a state decision on funding.
A unified promenade from Amathus to Kourion
The ultimate goal of the project remains the creation of a continuous pedestrian and cycling route from Amathus to Kourion across the entire Limassol coastal front. This concept is part of the regional Master Development Plan, on which municipalities have been working for several years.
According to the mayor, the involvement of universities is intended to transform long-term statements into real, technically developed, and feasible projects. Amid growing interest in active lifestyles, sustainable tourism, and comfortable urban spaces, the new coastal infrastructure could become one of the key factors in improving quality of life and the investment attractiveness of the region.
