TEPAK Technical School and Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence to acquire modern building in Limassol

On Tuesday 2 September, the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) signed a contract with the Cyfield Construction – Cyfield Development consortium for the construction of a new Technical School and Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence building in the Kato Polemidia area of Limassol. Another large-scale university project is already underway here: the construction of student dormitories.

The complex is expected to become the university's second most important infrastructure facility in this location. It is estimated to cost more than €12 million. Financing is provided through a loan agreement with the European Investment Bank, and the implementation period is 18 months.

Energy efficiency and innovation in architecture

The building has been designed in accordance with the latest energy efficiency standards and sustainable construction principles. It will house state-of-the-art laboratories, digital lecture halls and specially organised areas where researchers, teachers and students can collaborate. According to TEPAC Rector Professor Panagiotis Zafiris, this project opens up new horizons for scientific and educational development by creating conditions for long-term international collaboration.

The Eratosthenes Centre: from 20 m² to European scale

The head of the Eratosthenes Centre of Excellence, Professor Diofantos Hadjimitakis, noted that, for an organisation which began its work in 2007 in a space of only 20 m², the construction of a new building is a landmark event. Today, the centre is renowned throughout Europe and the Middle East as a leading research hub in geoinformatics, space technology, and Earth observation. The project will significantly expand research capabilities and strengthen Cyprus's role in international scientific initiatives, including European Space Agency programmes.

Economic and educational impact on the region

TEPAK Council President Andreas Karakatsanis emphasised that the project is the result of many years of strategic planning, supported by the state and the university council. According to Karakatsanis, this is an investment not only in education and science, but also a powerful stimulus for the development of Limassol as Cyprus' science and technology centre. In the long term, the new campus will generate employment opportunities, attract international students, and serve as a platform for start-ups and technology projects.

Prospects for project completion

The construction contractor is the Cyfield Construction – Cyfield Development consortium, which has committed to completing the work on time and within the approved budget. The project architect, Andreas Nikolaou, presented a detailed plan of the future complex, emphasising that its design considers the functional needs of the scientific community as well as its integration into the urban environment.
