The Paralimni–Deryneia Municipality continues to actively develop coastal infrastructure. As part of the beach improvement program, the first site with 40 “smart” lockers for personal belongings has been launched. Soon, 7 more complexes will be installed along the coast, significantly enhancing convenience and security for both residents and tourists.
Mayor Yiorgos Nikoletos emphasized that the project is an innovative solution, relieving visitors of worries about the safety of their property while also making life easier for those who walk along the Protaras promenade daily.
How the Smart Lockers Work
Modern technology has made storage simple and secure. Each locker can be opened using a palm print sensor or a four-digit code. Inside, there is a charging cable for mobile phones or other electronic devices — especially useful for tourists spending the whole day on the beach.
Rental Costs and Terms
The municipality noted that the project is implemented in cooperation with a private company responsible for installation, maintenance, and pricing. Rental prices are kept affordable:
Small Lockers:
- 1 hour — €1
- 2 hours — €2
- 3 hours — €3
- 3–6 hours — €4.8
- 6–12 hours — €6
- 12–24 hours — €8.9
Large Lockers:
- 1 hour — €2
- 2 hours — €3.5
- 3 hours — €4.8
- 3–6 hours — €7.8
- 6–12 hours — €10
- 12–24 hours — €12.9
This system makes the service convenient for both short-term and long-term storage.
Convenience for Tourists and Locals
The presence of smart lockers is a step toward increasing the tourism appeal of the region. According to Cypriot authorities, Protaras and Deryneia have recently ranked among the most popular destinations for family vacations. Tourists increasingly prefer beaches with developed infrastructure, where they can enjoy the sea while feeling safe.
With the number of visitors to Cyprus growing, especially after the lifting of pandemic restrictions, such services improve the quality of the seaside experience and enhance trust in the region as a modern tourist destination.
Why the Project Matters for Cyprus
Investments in smart technologies are part of Cyprus’ long-term strategy to develop “smart cities” and create a comfortable environment for residents and visitors. Projects like this combine beach leisure with high levels of service and security, while also building a positive international image for the country in the tourism sector.
