On September 25, 2026, Christina Papadopoulou, spokesperson for the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), said during a radio interview that delays in issuing some electricity bills were caused by a technical problem related to connecting new smart meters to the central system.
In some cases, consumption data reached the system late, so electricity bills were not issued on time. As a result, some household customers received two bills at once, covering a total period of four months. According to EAC, the issue affected 1.8% of approximately 650,000 bills issued by the company every two months. This corresponds to around 11,700 bills. Papadopoulou stressed that EAC is gradually resolving the technical problem.
Can the electricity bill be paid in instalments?
If two bills accumulated specifically because of this delay, EAC customers are advised to contact the company and arrange an instalment plan. According to Papadopoulou, EAC is prepared to accommodate consumers who have found themselves in this situation.
At the same time, the delay itself does not mean that consumption was calculated incorrectly. EAC says that actual consumption data continue to be recorded correctly and that no additional charges should arise because of the technical fault. The company also stated that customers whose bills were not issued on time because of this problem will not have their electricity disconnected.

How to pay for electricity in equal monthly instalments
Household EAC customers also have a separate permanent option allowing them to spread electricity costs evenly throughout the year. This is done through the equal monthly payment scheme.
The amount is calculated automatically based on past consumption, current tariffs and fuel prices. The minimum monthly payment is €25. Participation in the scheme lasts for 12 months and is then renewed automatically.
EAC may adjust the monthly payment amount during the year to prevent a large debt or overpayment from accumulating. At the end of the billing year, actual consumption is reconciled. Any difference is distributed across the next 12 payments. At the same time, the total amount paid for electricity does not become higher than what the customer would have paid under the standard billing system. There are several important conditions:
- the scheme is intended for EAC household customers;
- Net Metering participants are not included;
- to join the scheme, the most recently issued bill must first be paid;
- the monthly payment is made on the 6th–7th day of each month;
- if two consecutive payments are missed, participation in the scheme is terminated and the outstanding amount becomes immediately payable;
- applications can be submitted through the EAC portal, mobile app or customer service centre.
Why electricity bills in Cyprus remain high
Fuel prices continue to affect the cost of electricity. As the EAC representative explained, changes in global prices are reflected in Cyprus electricity tariffs with a delay of around two months because the company uses fuel stocks purchased earlier. At the same time, the government continues to support household consumers in 2026. From May 1, 2026, until March 31, 2027, VAT on electricity for all household consumers has been reduced to 5%. Separate support measures are also available for vulnerable households.
