The largest infrastructure projects in decades will begin in Polis Chrysochous in 2026. According to Mayor Yotis Papachristofis, these projects will involve multimillion-euro investments in expanding the Port of Lachi, constructing a sewage system, redeveloping the historic centers of Polis Chrysochous and Prodromi, developing archaeological sites, and building a modern amphitheater.
While most projects are scheduled to officially begin in 2026, some work will start by the end of this year. Papachristofis stressed that this was made possible by years of preparation, design, and coordination.
This development is significant for the region
Polis Chrysochous is surrounded by unique nature and is located at the gateway to the Akamas Peninsula. For a long time, it was left out of the intensive development that other resort regions of Cyprus underwent. Now, however, the situation is changing. With a combination of government investment and major private projects, the municipality expects western Cyprus to become one of the country's key tourist growth areas. The expansion of the Latchi port is particularly important, as there are plans to open a new international hotel complex by 2026. This project promises to transform the region's tourism landscape, attracting visitors to the island.
Infrastructure and small projects
In addition to large-scale investments, small projects worth around €700,000 will be implemented in 2025 in cooperation with the Ministry of Tourism in the Polis Chrysochous municipal districts. The aim is to improve public spaces, upgrade infrastructure, and create an attractive urban environment.
Tourism, jobs, and support for local residents are key objectives
The mayor emphasized that the new projects will provide long-term benefits, including tourism development, job creation, and an improved quality of life. Particular attention is being paid to synergies with agriculture and livestock farming. Thanks to the growth in tourist numbers, local farmers and producers will be able to sell their products, boosting the region's economy as a whole.
Prospects
The region is currently popular with tourists due to its proximity to Akamas and the peaceful atmosphere of the resort. However, a real breakthrough is expected in 2026 when new hotels, cultural facilities, and modernized infrastructure begin operating at full capacity. Thus, Polis Chrysochous is poised to transform from a secluded area into one of Cyprus's most promising tourist destinations.
