The Municipality of Polis Chrysochous has officially announced a new tender to find investors for the modernization and operation of a campsite that has been closed since 2023. Only one application was submitted previously, but it was rejected for failing to provide the required letter of guarantee.
According to Mayor Yiotis Papachristofis, the municipality unanimously decided to hold a new tender. The deadline for submitting applications this time is the end of August. If this round is also unsuccessful, the authorities will consider alternative ways to restore the campsite, which is located in one of the most picturesque areas of Cyprus.
Long-awaited revival: over €2.3 million invested in campsite
The total cost of the project, including major repairs and subsequent operation, is estimated at approximately €2.3 million. The project includes:
- Construction of modern buildings, including a beach restaurant and three new shower blocks to replace the old buildings;
- Creation of a playground and recreation area.
- Asphalting of roads and organization of clearly marked areas for motorists.
- Renovation of infrastructure for caravans, with 20 specially equipped sites that have access to electricity and water.
- A secluded area for camping will be provided, and vehicles will only be allowed in certain areas.
The construction itself will cost €2.19 million, excluding VAT. The interested investor will have to invest not only in renovating the site but also in restoring its former popularity. The campsite was a favorite vacation spot for Cypriots and tourists before it closed.
Rental conditions: up to 25 years of stable management
According to the terms of the tender, the contract with the winner will be signed for a term of up to 25 years, including an initial period ending in 2040, with the possibility of extension to 2055. The annual rent is €60,000, with an automatic increase of 5% every two years. This long-term agreement should provide investors with stability and confidence in their return on investment.
History of the conflict: why the campsite was abandoned
The campsite closed due to a prolonged conflict between the municipality and the previous private operator. The legal disputes lasted several years and ended in November 2023 when the property was officially returned to the municipality. Despite its high tourist potential, it has remained abandoned since then.
Chrysochus Police Department is betting on investments in tourism
The municipal authorities emphasize their intention to revitalize the coastal area and restore the campsite's status as a major regional tourist attraction. With growing interest in domestic tourism and eco-friendly vacations, the restoration of the campsite could present an excellent opportunity for private investors. The renovated campsite is expected to become one of the most modern and attractive tourist destinations on Cyprus's west coast.
