Patticheio Park to Open in Larnaca This July

One of the most anticipated urban improvement projects in Larnaca is entering its final stage. After approximately six months of additional delays, work on the redevelopment of Patticheio Park—the city’s largest green space located next to the famous Salt Lake—is nearing completion.

Municipal authorities expect to take possession of the site by the end of the current month, while the park is scheduled to open to visitors in early July. The new public space is intended not only as a recreational area but also as one of the city’s newest natural attractions. The project is being implemented under the THALIA 2021–2027 programme with co-financing from the European Union.

Why the Project Was Delayed

The redevelopment of Patticheio Park has been one of Larnaca’s most widely discussed urban projects in recent years. Construction began in autumn 2023 but encountered several significant challenges during implementation.

Initially, some local residents objected to elements of the original design. This led to a temporary suspension of works and a subsequent revision of the project.

Additional complications arose due to environmental restrictions, as the park lies within a Natura 2000 protected area and is located adjacent to the Larnaca Salt Lake, one of Cyprus’s most important natural landmarks. Construction timelines were also affected by restrictions imposed by the Game and Fauna Service, which introduced special operating conditions to protect the local ecosystem.

What Changed Following Public Consultations

After consultations with local residents, the project underwent substantial modifications. The primary objective of the revisions was to reduce the amount of concrete surfaces and preserve the area's natural character.

All sports courts, the planned skate park, and most of the originally proposed parking areas were removed from the final design. Only the parking facilities near Artemidos Avenue and Epirou Street were retained.

In addition, it was decided that all walking paths would be constructed using environmentally friendly materials that blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape.

According to municipal officials, these changes made it possible to strike a balance between urban development and the preservation of the area's unique natural environment.

What the New Park Will Offer

Once completed, Patticheio Park will become one of the most modern public spaces in Larnaca.

Among its key features will be a circular pedestrian bridge surrounding the amphitheatre, which is expected to become one of the park’s defining architectural elements.

The project also includes the creation of a botanical garden, a dedicated dog park, an outdoor fitness area overlooking the Salt Lake, a restaurant with a children’s playground, and new routes for walking and relaxation.

Accessibility has been a major priority throughout the design process. According to the municipality, the park will be fully accessible to people with disabilities and will comply with modern standards for inclusive urban environments.

In the near future, the Municipality of Larnaca intends to launch a tender for the lease of the café that will operate within the park and serve visitors.

A New Green Heart for Larnaca

The main goal of the project is to create a large ecological and recreational space close to the city center that is accessible to both residents and visitors.

In recent years, Cyprus has actively pursued projects aimed at increasing the number of public green spaces. This trend is driven both by population growth in urban areas and by the need to adapt cities to climate change and rising summer temperatures.

Against this backdrop, Patticheio Park is regarded as one of the island’s most significant environmental projects. The new park is expected to become an important part of Larnaca’s urban infrastructure, improve residents’ quality of life, and enhance the attractiveness of the Salt Lake area for tourists.
