The Paralimni-Deryneia Municipality announced that it received planning permission on August 10, 2026, for a project designed to transform the center of Paralimni and support local commercial activity.
The project includes:
- replacing the existing road surface;
- constructing and upgrading sidewalks;
- planting new trees;
- creating green areas;
- developing service areas for shops and visitors;
- increasing the number of parking spaces.
According to the municipality, the project's main objective is to create a modern, functional, and accessible urban environment that will improve residents' daily lives. At the same time, the redevelopment is expected to stimulate commercial and social activity while making Paralimni more attractive to tourists. The concept also aims to preserve the city's unique identity by taking into account its history, traditions, and the collective memory of its residents.
Project Details
The current project differs from the original concept. According to the revised plans presented in 2025, the municipal council abandoned the idea of completely closing the center of Paralimni to traffic. Vehicle access through the town center will be maintained. Before preparing the project, the municipality conducted public consultations on traffic management. The transportation study considered the possibility of introducing one-way traffic on Griva Digeni, Constantinoupoleos, Tassou Markou, and Kolokotroni streets.
The plans also include the renovation of the existing paved square, the creation of new green areas, open public spaces, and additional parking facilities. The estimated cost of the project changed as the concept evolved. A government program announced in February 2025 allocated €11.2 million for the reconstruction of the square and a broader redevelopment of the city center.
Later, Paralimni-Deryneia Mayor Giorgos Nicolettos estimated the cost of redeveloping the square alone at €4 million plus VAT, while the reconstruction of the entire central district was estimated at €7 million plus VAT. However, the municipality's latest announcement did not specify an updated project budget. Construction work cannot begin yet. The municipality must first complete the detailed designs and technical studies before obtaining a building permit and the remaining required approvals.
A New Square Near the Church and a 296-Space Parking Facility
The redevelopment of central Paralimni consists of three separate projects. One of the key elements will be a new square next to the Church of Agios Georgios. The planning application was submitted on November 4, 2025, approved on February 4, 2026, and officially transferred to the municipality the following day.
The new square will include:
- an events space;
- a park;
- areas designated for monuments;
- extensive green spaces;
- accessible infrastructure for people with limited mobility.
The square is designed to host large public events and is expected to become a new gathering place for both residents and visitors. The municipality plans to announce a construction tender during the first quarter of 2027.
Another project is already underway: a multi-level parking facility on Antonis Papadopoulos Street. Construction began on March 4, 2025, under an 18-month contract awarded to N. Gavriel & Sons Ltd.
The three-story parking structure will accommodate 296 vehicles, including 17 spaces for drivers with disabilities and three spaces equipped for electric vehicles. The building will also include an elevator to improve accessibility. The construction cost of the parking facility amounts to €6.76 million. Part of the funding is being provided by the Department of Lands and Surveys as part of an urban development initiative. The total cost of the facility within the broader government redevelopment program was previously estimated at €8 million.
