Paphos airport is preparing for a major upgrade that will begin as early as the first half of 2025.
This was announced recently by the management of the airport's operator, Hermes.
The project includes the construction of an additional taxiway and the expansion of the terminal. This is expected to increase the airport's capacity to 5 million passengers a year. All environmental standards will be met and the impact on the environment will be minimised. In particular, measures will be taken to control air quality and prevent soil and water pollution. For Cypriot residents and tourists, this means more convenient flights, shorter queues and comfortable travelling conditions throughout the year. It should be noted that the work will take 1.5 years and cost more than €5 million.
Paphos Airport opened its doors in 1982.
It is located 14 kilometres south-east of the city, near the village of Timi. The airport has 28 check-in counters, 3 baggage belts and 800 parking spaces. It can handle around 2.7 million passengers a year. However, due to the recent influx of tourists, Paphos airport has been operating at full capacity. Passengers complain about its small size, low building capacity and poor infrastructure.
In particular, Paphos airport is facing a huge workload due to its small size and the increasing number of flights it handles. This leads to overcrowding, long queues and poor service for travellers.
The issue of expanding the airport has been raised several times. However, due to delays and legal disputes between the Cypriot government and the Cypriot airport operator, Hermes, the implementation of this initiative has been constantly postponed. Now, finally, the matter has moved forward.
