On Tuesday, August 25, a meeting was held at the Presidential Palace between acting Paphos Mayor Angelos Onisiforou and government representatives. The main topics were new projects, the development of urban infrastructure and the next steps required for their implementation.
The mayor was accompanied by a municipal delegation. The discussion was attended by Government Spokesman Constantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki and Director General of the Directorate General for Development Penelope Papavassiliou. The parties reviewed both initiatives already under way and projects that the municipality plans to launch in the future.
Which projects were discussed
The main focus was on the current status of construction and infrastructure projects in Paphos, as well as the administrative procedures required to move to the next stage. Participants discussed:
- the progress of projects already under implementation;
- the preparation of new development projects;
- the actions required to advance the initiatives;
- the next steps for launching and implementing the planned works.
At the same time, the municipality’s announcement did not specify the exact list of new projects, their cost or construction timelines.
Government to continue supporting Paphos
The municipality said the meeting took place in a “particularly positive and constructive atmosphere”. The government confirmed its intention to continue providing practical support to the municipality and to assist with the implementation of projects related to the city’s development. Both sides attach particular importance to cooperation between the Cyprus government and Paphos Municipality. The aim is to accelerate projects that are expected to strengthen the city’s economic and infrastructure potential while also improving the urban environment for residents.
This is especially relevant for Paphos as the city continues to develop as one of Cyprus’s key tourism and investment centres. New infrastructure projects are expected to accompany growth in population, tourist flows and construction activity.
Following the meeting, the municipality and the government are expected to continue working on the necessary procedures and approvals. The speed of these processes will determine how quickly new initiatives can move from the planning stage to construction. The development of Paphos therefore remains one of the priority areas of cooperation between local authorities and the central government of Cyprus. Further decisions are expected to advance both projects already under way and new initiatives aimed at modernising the city.
