Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos has announced the launch of a number of major projects to renew the city's infrastructure by 2025.
One of the most important will be the transformation of the old GSP stadium. This project is almost complete. Soon the old stadium will present itself to the capital's residents as a modern multifunctional space, including a park, underground car park, amphitheatre and commercial areas.
It should be noted that the works are being carried out in the area between Grigori Afxentiou, Evagorou and Vasileos Pavlou streets, east of the Ministry of Finance building in Nicosia. The project has a budget of over €20 million and will include not only the reconstruction of the stadium but also its maintenance by the development company for the next 10 years. Money for the project has been allocated from the EU Cohesion Fund, the state budget and the Nicosia municipality as part of the 2021-2027 Regional Development Programme.
The streets and avenues of the Cypriot capital will also undergo radical changes. Stasinou Avenue is currently undergoing improvements, and at the end of January work will begin on the renovation of the inner perimeter of the city walls. The municipality plans to rebuild Trikupi Street and modernise Famagusta Avenue.
Local authorities are paying particular attention to social initiatives. The municipality has almost completed the construction of two student hostels and a centre for children with disabilities. In addition, a multifunctional centre will be built in the Engomi district by 2026.
The Mayor of Nicosia highlighted that Eleftheria Square and other public spaces attracted a record number of residents and tourists during the festive season. This demonstrates the high level of implementation of the Nicosia Revitalisation Programme.
