A new bus station will be built in Larnaca

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Public Works of Cyprus has announced the signing of a contract for the construction of a central bus station in Larnaca. The agreement was signed on behalf of the ministry by Stelios Zervos, and on behalf of the contractor, Iacovou Brothers (Constructions) Ltd, by Alkis Iacovou. The total cost of the project is estimated at €6.387 million excluding VAT. Construction works are scheduled to begin in mid-May 2026.

Why the bus station is needed and where it will be located

The idea of creating a central bus station in Larnaca emerged as part of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan. Specialists considered several scenarios for the development of the transport system, and as a result, a comprehensive approach was recognized as the best solution, with a central interchange hub playing a key role.

This format allows urban, intercity, and regional bus routes to be combined in one location, reducing the load on the road network and making transfers easier for passengers.

The new bus station will be built on state-owned land in the marina area. The choice of this location is no coincidence: there is sufficient space for modern infrastructure, efficient traffic organization, and future development of the coastal area. In addition, this location will provide direct access to the city's key transport routes, including quick access to Larnaca International Airport. This is especially important given the growth of tourist flows and increasing domestic mobility in Cyprus.

Construction details and station facilities

The project is divided into two parts. The first concerns road infrastructure. It involves the expansion of a section of Falirou Street approximately 108 meters long. It will feature two traffic lanes — one in each direction — each 3.5 meters wide, as well as sidewalks measuring 3 meters on the southern side and 2 meters on the northern side. This is necessary to ensure convenient entry and exit for buses to and from the station.

The second part includes the station building itself and the surrounding area. The complex will occupy a plot of approximately 9,750 m². Passengers will have access to a spacious waiting hall, ticket offices, staff facilities, a food and beverage kiosk, as well as sanitary facilities for visitors and personnel. All these structures will be covered by a metal canopy with an area of 3,100 m².

As for parking, the site will include 8 boarding platforms and 9 bus parking spaces — both under the canopy and in open areas. There will also be 7 parking spaces for staff, 2 taxi parking spots, and one designated space for people with disabilities. In addition, the station will feature its own maintenance area with two bus parking spaces, a storage facility, and a temporary pick-up and drop-off zone for taxis.

Funding and significance of the project

Construction will be carried out under the “THALIA 2021–2027” Cohesion Policy Programme with co-financing from the European Union. The costs will be covered by the Directorate-General for Growth, while payments will be handled by the Department of Public Works. The signing of the contract marks an important step toward creating infrastructure that will improve daily life and make public transport in Larnaca truly convenient and attractive. The new station is expected to become a key hub for passenger transport in the region and help significantly reduce traffic congestion.
