Larnaca is preparing for a major revitalisation. Over the next two years, a series of projects worth more than €22 million will be carried out that will change the face of the city.
This was announced by Larnaca mayor Andreas Viras on Wednesday 31 July.
According to Viras, the basis of the transformation will be the revitalisation of the central part of the city. EUR 5.1 million will be spent on this. At the same time, an investment of €3.5 million will breathe new life into Alkis and Acropolis squares, where modern public spaces will be created. These projects are scheduled to start in September 2024 and be completed by autumn 2026.
Vyras also noted that the municipality is now focusing on greening Larnaca and creating comfortable public infrastructure. In particular, the municipality is finalising the construction of Salina Park, for which €2.4 million has been allocated. It is due to open in October this year. The municipality is also developing the Pattihio Park and the Tsakkilero recreational area, both of which are scheduled for completion in 2025.
Vyras stressed that Larnaca has experienced a significant increase in population in recent years, which has led to certain inconveniences such as traffic congestion and parking problems.
Therefore, the municipality intends to invest €18 million in sustainable urban mobility. The project, funded by the Cyprus Recovery and Sustainability Plan, aims to transform the city's road network and promote public transport and cycling infrastructure.
The initiative includes dedicated bus and cycle lanes, improved pedestrian crossings and enhanced road safety measures. The project is led by the Department of Public Works. Its implementation will start in January 2025 and be completed in 18 months. Finally, the municipality is preparing to modernise the old hospital for its own use. The tender is expected to be announced in the coming months.
